In my opinion, metaphor makes interaction simple, natural and intuitive. A good example of using metaphor is "Pick-and-Drop" by Pekimoto et al. Users do not have to learn sophisticated interaction procedures but still get no less benefits from it.
Shadow reaching, as I see, is not exactly a metaphor. Even though shadow highly stems from real life (natural). Using it as an interaction technique does not sound familiar (not intuitive). And we also need to make it simple to use.
The single point interaction is fairly simple, natural and intuitive. The first use we might think of is extending our shadow to reach something our body cannot reach. Whole body interaction is less natural and intuitive, but still quite interesting and learnable. And I think we should think about it if we want to add even more complexities.
Some problems occur in using shadows. For example, the display is dark in the shadow so the entire picture is less homogeneous. When using shadows as Magic Lenses, it is possible that we cannot see clearly what lies within our shadow (actually this part is supposed to be highlighted).

This paper reminds me of shadow boxing. Florian 'Floyd' Mueller used to work on this project.
